Elden kom is a solo exhibition by Swedish artist Isabel Theselius. Roughly translated to English as “The fire came,” it can also be understood as asking for the fire to come, simultaneously referring to the past and the future. The exhibition features a mixed media installation building on myths around a diner, lounge, and bowling alley called The Red Mill, owned by Theselius’s husband’s great grandparents in Detroit, Michigan, through the 1950s and 60s. Having a fascination with fire, both as a symbol and as a physical phenomenon, Theselius grew an interest in the diner after learning that it burned down twice under shadowy circumstances. Through photographs and postcards of the interior, collected by her husband’s family and memorabilia found online, Theselius has created images and objects inspired by the diner as the fire begins.

Theselius is not interested in the true causes of the fires but is rather interested in sustaining and adding new narratives into those myths. In a twist of the tale, Theselius has inserted her own son into the chronicle of The Red Mill with the fanciful notion that his mischievous and spirited nature, starting as an infant and to the present day as a 4-year-old, derives from his past life as the cause of the fires. The fear of raising a child that would become a pyromaniac or engage in other non-desirable activities has haunted Theselius since she learned of her pregnancy.

Theselius’s son plays a role in several of the works presented in the exhibition, even contributing with two drawings made on diner paper placemats. He also occurs as a projection inside a napkin holder, playing peek-a-boo, where every time his face shows up, there are flames in his eyes. In another piece, Theselius has created a toddler size bar inspired by The Red Mills bar and lounge for her son to play bartender in. The bar is equipped with small liquor bottles collected from the streets of Theselius’s previous neighborhood in Jersey City, as the size of the bottles appealed to her son. Here Theselius is playing with another fear of hers, of her son developing an alcohol problem as an adult. By introducing a constructed environment featuring attributes and images of alcohol consumption at an early age, Theselius is humorously hoping that her son will grow out of the fascination for it before he becomes a teenager.

This kind of playfulness also shows up in a small sculpture placed on a table covered with a white table cloth. It features a cup of coffee with a self-stirring spoon that is slowly moving as if it was possessed by some kind of magic, although the sound of a motor hints at how the piece is constructed.

In a number of colored pencil drawings, Theselius is rendering interior images of The Red Mill with flames threatening to consume the building. The drawings dive into ideas of a mythic American past during the post-war boom years and the realities of loss and repeated tragedy. There are also more sinister undertones of mounting civil unrest and the Detroit Riots in 1967 (evidently, The Red Mill burned to the ground during the riots) and the broader political landscape of the period.

Isabel Theselius is a Swedish artist born 1986 in Lund, and is based both in the south of Sweden and in New York City. Theselius works on the basis of her own experiences but also with what she calls projected, imagined and collective memories. Other recurring themes in her art are mortality, desire, longing and superstition. Her work often takes the form of drawings, sculptures, videos and installations. Daydreams become points of inspiration but can also turn into nightmares that consume her past and present, blending reality with fiction.
